How Whatnot seller fees work

Whatnot charges US sellers two fees, deducted from your earnings at sale time. The commission is 8% of the item's final sale price — hammer price for auctions, accepted price for offers. It does not apply to shipping or tax. The payment processing fee is 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction, and its base is the total order value: item price plus buyer-paid shipping plus sales tax.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Whatnot take per sale?
Whatnot charges an 8% commission on the item's final sale price plus a payment processing fee of 2.9% + $0.30 on the total order value (item + buyer-paid shipping + tax). On a $50 card with $8.70 of buyer-paid shipping and tax, that's $4.00 commission + $2.00 processing = $6.00 in fees, netting you $44.00.
What percentage does Whatnot take?
The headline commission is 8%, but the effective rate is higher because the 2.9% + $0.30 processing fee also applies to buyer-paid shipping and tax. On a typical $50 card sale the all-in effective rate is about 12% of the item price. Lower-priced items have higher effective rates because of the flat $0.30.
Does Whatnot charge fees on shipping?
There is no commission on shipping, but the 2.9% payment processing fee is calculated on the total order value, which includes buyer-paid shipping and sales tax. So you do pay processing on shipping, just not the 8% commission.
Are there listing fees on Whatnot?
No. Whatnot does not charge fees to create, store, or manage listings. You only pay fees when an item sells. Giveaways carry no seller fees either — you only cover the shipping.
What is the 0% commission promo on high-value sports cards?
Since January 14, 2026, Whatnot charges 0% commission on the portion of a sale above $1,500 in select categories, including sports card singles and trading card games (sports breaks are excluded). The standard 8% still applies to the first $1,500, and the full payment processing fee applies to the entire transaction. Whatnot labels this a limited-time promotion.
